Tournament Rules 
 

  1. Teams and Free Agents
    1. Each team is required to have a minimum of 10 skaters and 1 goalie and a maximum of 15 skaters and 2 goalies. Any team that does not meet the minimum requirements will have Free Agents assigned to their teams at the discretion of the Rules and Regulations Committee.
    2. Players will designate a team when they register. The captains from each team will approve the roster for their team. Any player that is not approved will be reassigned as a Free Agent.
    3. Players can register as a Free Agent and will be placed on teams when space becomes available. The Rules and Regulations Committee will try to place all Free Agents with available teams. In the event that a space is not available the Free Agents registration fee will be reimbursed. The Coors Cup Tournament is not responsible for any other fees incurred as a result.
    4. Teams may be required to pay for unused available slots.
    5. Based on the amount of teams and Free Agents, the Rules and Regulations Committee may form a team entirely of Free Agents.
    6. Players may be granted permission to play on multiple teams from the Rules and Regulations Committee if the teams do not play in the same division. Additional fees may apply.
  2. Registration
    1. Any player who has not signed in at the Registration Event must report to the arena at least one hour prior to the start of their games in order to “sign in”. This requirement may be waived at the discretion of the Tournament Director.
    2. All players must carry photo ID or an official Coors Cup player pass with them at all times during tournament play.
    3. No changes to the roster are allowed after the official registration of the team unless they have permission of the Rules and Regulations Committee.
    4. Each team must designate their charity along with registration. All charities are subject to approval by the Coors Cup Tournament Committee.
    5. All players must be 18 years old by September 5, 2009. If there are any events that are restricted to certain age groups, an alternative will be available for any players who age does not fall in that age range.
  3. Tournament Rules
    1. The tournament game play will follow USA Hockey Official Rules of Hockey (rule book available upon request or online) for all games except where otherwise noted. For any clarification of the rules please see the Tournament Play Coordinator:
      1. All teams will be guaranteed a minimum of 3 round robin games and 1 playoff game.
      2. Full slap shots are allowed from anywhere on the ice.
      3. The red line is not used for two-line passes.
      4. No-touch icing using the red line is in effect.
      5. Hurry up face offs will be in effect and each team must be ready quickly following the stoppage in play. Any attempt by a team to slow the drop of the puck may result in a delay of game penalty.
      6. Each team is allowed one 30 second timeout per game.
      7. Visors (at least half visors) or cages are required for insurance reasons.
      8. Each non-injured rostered player must participate in at least one of the team’s round robin games to be eligible for the playoffs.
      9. If a team has only one goalkeeper and he/she is injured during the game requiring him/her to leave the game, or is not available at the start of the game that team will play with six players until a substitute goalkeeper is dressed and ready for play.
      10. Any forfeited games will be recorded as a 3-0 score with 1 goal per period. Any forfeited games affecting other teams in terms of playoff status may be reviewed by the tournament director in order to determine which teams advance beyond preliminary round play.
      11. The use of ineligible players will disqualify team from remaining tournament play. All games played by the disqualified team will be forfeited (3-0 score recorded – 1 goal per period). No monies will be refunded
      12. Each team is required to be ready by the scheduled start time of their games. Warm-up time will be determined by officials at the start of each game in consideration of the tournament schedule.
      13. The ice will be resurfaced prior to each game unless directed by a member of the Tournament Committee.
    2. Tournament directors reserve the right to take measures necessary to ensure completion of the tournament.
  4. Penalties
    1. Body checking is prohibited. Any player who delivers a body check will be assessed a minor or major penalty at the officials’ discretion.
    2. For a minor penalty, any player, other than a goalkeeper, shall be ruled off the ice for two minutes during which no substitute shall be permitted.
    3. For a major penalty, any player, other than the goalkeeper, shall be ruled off the ice for five minutes during which no substitute shall be permitted.
    4. A misconduct penalty involves the suspension of a player for the balance of the game, and the offender shall be removed from the game immediately. If the penalty occurs within the last two minutes of regulation play the offender will be suspended for one additional game.
    5. A match penalty involves the suspension of a player for the balance of the game, and the offender shall be removed from the game immediately. If the penalty occurs within the last two minutes of regulation play the offender will be suspended for one additional game.
    6. Any player receiving any 3 penalties (minor, major, match, misconduct or any combination of these) in one game will be suspended for the rest of the game.
    7. If 3 players from one team are assessed match or misconduct penalties within one game, that team shall immediately forfeit the game.
    8. Severe or flagrant infractions will be reviewed by the Rules and Regulations Committee before the next game of the player involved with possible suspensions or ejection from the tournament possible.
  5. Game Formats
    1. The format of Round Robin and Playoff Games (Excluding Divisional Championship Games) are as follows:
      1. The game format will consist of two 15 minute running-time periods and a 12 minute stop-time period.*
      2. There will be running time in the last five minutes of the third period if the goal difference is three goals or more.
      3. The scoring system will be as follows: two points per period with an additional two points awarded for winning the game. Where tie games or periods occur, the points will be split between the teams. The maximum points a team can earn are eight: two points for winning each period and two points for winning the game.
    2. The format Divisional Championship Games are as follows:
      1. The game will consist of two 15 minute running-time periods and one 15 minute stop-time period.*
      2. In the event of a tie, a 5 minute stop-time sudden death overtime period will be played. If the overtime results in a tie, a 5 player shootout will take place with each team designating 5 players to the officials. The winner will be determined by the score of the shootout. If the score is tied at the end of the shootout then each team will designate one player at a time in a sudden death shootout. No player may shoot twice unless all other players have had the chance to shoot.
  6. Round Robin Rankings/Playoff Seeding
    1. In the event that two or more teams have the same point total from the Round Robin play, the following criteria will be used to determine the playoff seeding:
      1. Head to head play
      2. The number of points in head to head play
      3. Total goals for.
      4. Total goals against
      5. Fewest penalty minutes
      6. A coin toss performed by a member of the Tournament Committee in the presence of a captain from each team.
  7. Game Protest
    1. Team protests must be registered, in writing, to the Rules and Regulations Committee and accompanied by $100 USD cash, within thirty (30) minutes after the completion of a game. The $100 is refundable if the protest is decided in the payee’s favor. Any disputes concerning the application or interpretation of the tournament rules will be resolved by the Rules and Regulations Committee, keeping in mind that the first priority is the integrity and success of the Coors Cup Tournament. All decisions taken in that respect will be final and binding and not subject to an appeal.
  8. Jerseys
    1. All teams are required to have a complete set of light (Home) and dark (Away) jerseys. All jerseys must have non-repeating numbers clearly displayed. When it is determined that there is insufficient contrast between competing teams jersey colors, the team designated as the Visiting team will change to a more contrasting color.
  9. Game Officials
    1. The Coors Cup Referee-in-Chief will be in charge of the officials for the tournament and will report directly to the Tournament Play Coordinator
    2. The system of officiating for Round Robin and Playoff Games (excluding Divisional Championship Games) will be two referees. For Divisional Championship Games there will be one referee and two linesmen.
  10. Zero Tolerance
    1. A zero tolerance rule for verbal abuse is in effect. For players and coaches; a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct (zero tolerance) shall be assessed whenever a player:
      1. Openly disputes or argues about any decision by an official.
      2. Uses obscene or vulgar language in a boisterous manner to anyone at anytime, even if it is not directed at any particular person.
      3. Visually demonstrates any sign of dissatisfaction with any decision by an official.
  11. Insurance and Liability
    1. The Coors Cup Tournament Committee, Los Angeles Blades, Inc. and the Colorado Gay Ice Hockey Association will not be responsible for injuries incurred by any player, team officials, or spectators.
    2. All repair and/or replacement costs associated with any damage done to any property at any ice arena or other facility will be born by the team(s) of the person(s) causing such damage. Immediate arrangements for restitution must be made and violations of this rule are cause for disqualification from current and future tournaments.
